Tour 1 - The Copper Mountain
Join us for a walk through 4000 years of history. As you experience the colours, the sights and the truly awe-inspiring scale of the place your guide will tell you the stories of its life and times. Hold in your hand a genuine Bronze Age stone hammer as you gaze into the extraordinary abyss of the Great Opencast, Anglesey's 'Grand Canyon'.
You'll hear how the miners were forced to bid against each other for the right to work, how they lived and worked, blasted and dug. How every ounce of copper was won by hand, and then went on to help fire the Industrial evolution and even to plate Nelsons flagship,The Victory, at the battle of Trafalgar. Special to this place though is the story and the memory of the famous 'Copper Ladies' . The formidable women who every day pounded the ore by hand, yet still kept hearth and home. Don't forget to bring your camera, your friends back home will never believe what you've seen! Tip: The paths around the mountain are rough in places with loose rock underfoot, we really recommend walking boots, trainers or good shoes, keep the flip flops for the beach! Well behaved dogs are very welcome! |
The tour takes approximately 2 hours and covers around 1.5 miles, though there will be plenty of stops for a breather, enjoy the views and take photos etc. It certainly isn't a route march!
Tours are held 2pm every Sunday and Thursday in the Summer season (unless the weather is terrible). Your guide will be waiting at the gate, wearing a distinctive gold badge with the druid's head emblem. Tours are £8.00 per head, £5.00 for under 16. If you want to book a private tour please contact us HERE |
Tour 2 - The Photography Special
This tour is aimed at anybody interested in getting some great images of the mountain, and maybe some unusual shots that you may never have considered. As well as the best known viewpoints we will go 'off piste' to discover some of the less well known but fascinating sights, a miners musical instrument anyone?
Whether your interest is landscape, macro, abstract or you just lile a nice photo this will be a great tour, you'll get the opportunity to fire away at the colour and drama of the opencasts, we can shoot textures, ore, the varied plant life or the Choughs, Ravens and Paregrine Falcons that make the mountain their home. The tours are led by a pro photographer with many years experience photographing the site, I also lecture in Photography, Photojournalism and Photoshop in Bangor University. So if you're a pro looking for stock or art shots I can point you in all the right directions. If you're a keen amateur I can make sure that you leave a bag of great shots and if you're a novice I can help you get photos that will make you the hottest shot on Facebook! Incidentally, we don't do 'lens envy' all makes and model of cameras are welcome from the biggest to the cheapest! I seriously recommend using a tripod, if you don't have one with I can arrange for you you borrow one of mine. The paths around the mountain are rough in places with loose rock underfoot, we really recommend walking boots, trainers or good shoes, keep the flip flops for the beach! |
The tour takes roughly 4 hours, giving plenty of time to get some stunning shots. Group sizes are kept to a maximum of 6 meaning that everybosy will get a fair chance to shoot each site with maximum chance to ask any questions. (Larger groups, camera clubs etc can be accomodated, please contact us HERE to enquire).
Tours are held every Wednesday at 2pm during the Summer season. (Saturday tours can also arranged if there are sufficient bookings) Please book in advance as this is the only way we keep group numbers down! Tour is £15.00 per head, £10.00 for under 16 If you want to book a private tour or a 1 to 1 shooting session (a great gift for the photographer in your life! Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult) please contact us HERE |
Please Note: If the group wishes to access areas off the main mountain trail you will be doing it entirely at your own risk as you will be outside the area covered by the heritage trail insurance. That said, I won't be taking you anywhere I don't feel comfortable visiting myself and I will always point out any risks I know, allowing you to make informed decisions. Safe shooting means better shots!
Tour 3 - Shipyards and Sails
Walking round the beautiful sleepy little harbour of Amlwch Ports inner quay it's hard to imagine the noise and industry of its past. It's history as one of the busiest ports in Wales made all the more remarkable by the fact that it was never meant to be a port at all!
It's unusual harbour walls enclose a port with a rich history. The ships from its yards were some of the finest ever built, its quays teemed with sailors and dockers, as tons of ore sailed out and tons of coal, timber and tobacco sailed in. The hub of a trade between Wales, Ireland and England and further still to the distant Americas. This peaceful place has seen it all! During your tour you can explore the extraordinary story of the port through the eyes of your guide. Hear the tales of the sailors and the sail makers, hear about the tobacco trade and the copper trade, the ingenious buildings and the shipyards. Even the modern users of the Port, the fishermen and Mersey Pilots. |
